Halliwick Penguins SC

the first Halliwick swimming club for disabled people

HPSC Celebrates!

October 3rd, 2015 was a very exciting day for us!

We were delighted to welcome both the Worshipful Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Patricia Ekechi, and Mr John Ovens of the London Borough of Enfield, and celebrate with them by unveiling a plaque, to mark not only the contribution that Halliwick Penguins Swimming Club has made to swimming for disabled people since 1949, but also, in doing this, its partnership with the London Borough of Enfield and Fusion Lifestyle, which allows the club's work to continue.

We remembered that it was in 1949 that James ('Mac') and Phyl McMillan (who were both honoured by the Queen with an MBE during their lifetimes for their work in swimming for disabled people), began Halliwick swimming and this club.

That is something that continues to this day, the Halliwick Concept begun by them all those years ago, now used throughout the world.

We had a fabulous afternoon, celebrating with both the Mayor and John Ovens, who has been a long-time supporter of the club and its work.  The Mayor was delightful and took time to meet and talk to everyone there, individually!  It was also great to see so many of our members enjoying themselves and also, to welcome some "old faces" back for the afternoon.  We had a great time!

We are enormously thankful to 'Mac' and Phyl for their vision and determination, and immensely proud that it all started with Halliwick Penguins Swimming Club, way back in 1949, a club that still continues and grows with the support of the London Borough of Enfield and Fusion Lifestyle.
