  • Enter the water unaided from a sitting position to an instructor
  • Blow a plastic ‘egg' (support from behind if necessary) for 10 metres
  • Perform, aided in the normal manner, ‘kangaroo jumps' for 10 metres
  • Perform a forward recovery, with the minimum of aid
  • Yellow Badge A.S.T. proficiency badge 2
    • Enter the water from the poolside to a stable position in the water, unassisted in any way.
    • Sit on the bottom of the pool, or satisfactorily submerge, and demonstrate ability to breathe out under water.
    • ‘Kangaroo jumps' or walk unaided for a distance of 10 metres.
    • Demonstrate a horizontal Roll in either direction, with the minimum of aid.
    • Pick up a plate, or like object, from at least 1 metre of water.
    • Demonstrate a mushroom float for a minimum of 3 seconds.
  • Green Badge (independently examined)
    • Demonstrate ability to enter water head-first and unaided.
    • Perform unaided: 1. forward recovery 2. Rolling recovery
    • Float motionless for 10 seconds or mushroom float for 3 seconds.
    • Tread water for 60 seconds.
    • Perform a mushroom float, with a push by an instructor to a depth of 1.2 m, followed by the swimmers unassisted, controlled return to the surface and then recovery to a safe breathing position, by the use of lateral rotation.
    • Swim 10 metres by any method.
    • Against a swirl of water, EITHER get out over the side unaided, OR if this is physically impossible, maintain a safe position from which assistance can be given.

    For holders of A.S.T. green badge only

    Part 1 to be certified by the Club Chief Instructor before the day of the main test.

    Swim a distance of 400 metres, by any method, without stopping or touching, on a continuous circuit.

    Part II To be examined by a recognised external examiner from another club.

    • Swim on the back a figure of eight, within an area of 10 metres by 5 metres.
    • Submerge and push off from the side of the pool, and glide under water to reach the surface without any swimming stroke.
    • Submerge and recover 2 items, 1 metre apart, from a depth of at least 1 metre, without resurfacing until completion of the collection.
    • Submerge vertically feet first, until the water is ½ metre above the swimmer's head. Rise to the surface and maintain a vertical position, without touching the bottom, for 2 minutes or more.
  • Part III To be examined on the same day and by the same examiner as the above part. These tests take part in deep water.
  • A series of options to enable swimmers without legs, without arms, of with other specified problems to perform one skill within each of the disciplines without making a special allowance for their disability. Whenever possible more than one of each of these skills should be learned and the swimmer's techniques should be extended and improved.

    • Enter the water headfirst by either:
  • A) Seal dive using arms only or
  • b) Standing dive or

    c) Sitting dive.

    • Perform one of the following, either:
  • a) Rotary crawl using arms only or
  • b) Twin tail using legs only or

    c) Rolling log.

    • Perform one of the following, either:
  • A) Washing tub using arms or
  • B) Spinning top using legs or

    c) Water Wheel.

    • Perform one of the following, either:
  • A) Back somersault or
  • b) Front somersault or

    c) Pendulum, completing 1½ swings.
